Grief doesn’t just live in the heart; it lodges itself in the body. After my divorce, I began noticing sensations I had ignored for years: the tightness in my chest, the way my shoulders curled forward, as if I were quietly sheltering something fragile inside me. My mind insisted it was time to “move on,” but my body told a different story. It was still carrying the weight of unspoken fears, unmet needs, and unresolved emotions. Anxiety and insomnia became familiar companions during those months, draining energy from my soul and reminding me that logic alone cannot outpace loss.

What I eventually learned is that letting go isn’t a decision, it’s a practice. A gentle, daily invitation to meet ourselves with honesty. It begins the moment we become curious about where grief is hiding.

Sit quietly and take a slow breath.

Ask your body, “Where am I holding on?”

You might feel tension in your throat, belly, or shoulders.

Breathe into that space. Imagine exhaling warmth, permission, and care.

Grief often doesn’t need words; it needs movement. Walking, stretching, shaking out your hands, or dancing alone in your living room can help the body release what the mind cannot yet articulate. These small, instinctive movements create pathways for healing that talking alone sometimes cannot reach.

And sometimes, letting go doesn’t mean releasing the memory or the love, it means loosening your grip on the story of how life “should have been.” It means allowing your nervous system to unfurl, piece by piece, until it feels safe enough to soften again.

If your body is sending you signals, you don’t need to escape your life, what you do need is to turn toward yourself with presence. Your body is speaking because something in you wants attention.

If you’re unsure whether what you’re feeling is a thought or a genuine bodily message, try softening your grip on the thought. Let it drift a little. Then come back to what you can sense directly, the tightness, the warmth, the flutter, the heaviness. Let your awareness rest there without forcing meaning.

When you begin from the body, rather than the mind’s interpretations, you open a clearer doorway into your truth. From that place, you don’t have to figure everything out. You simply see what is, and that simple honesty becomes the starting point for change.

Your body will tell you when it’s ready to lighten. Listen with compassion. It knows the way home.

Loneliness after a breakup of a long-term relationship can feel like a hollow ache, especially in the quiet of evening. It isn’t just the absence of a person, it’s the absence of a rhythm, a familiar warmth, a shared world. I remember staring at the empty side of the bed, the untouched chair at dinner, the silence that once held conversation and laughter. Those moments felt like echoes of a life that no longer fit, like walking through a home where the lights had dimmed.

But over time, I discovered that loneliness isn’t an enemy, it’s an invitation. A quiet doorway back to yourself.

At first, I tried to outrun it with distractions, scrolling, noise, constant movement. Anything that kept me from feeling the stillness inside. It helped for moments but never for long, and I realised that loneliness cannot be numbed into disappearance; it needs to be understood, accompanied, even tended to.

So, I began experimenting with gentler rituals:

lighting a candle at dusk, meditating for 15 minutes in the morning, writing a single line in a journal, reading a novel slowly, or preparing a small meal with intention instead of urgency. These acts didn’t erase the emptiness, but they gave it company. They filled the space with presence rather than avoidance.

Hiking and swimming became an anchor for me and brought me fully into my body, quieting the noise in my mind. The water held me in a way the world could not at that time, steady, grounding, wordless. Nature reminded me that even in deep transition, life continues to move, shift, and renew.

Here are a few practices that may help:
